Signs Your AC Needs Repair in Las Vegas
With July highs averaging 104.5°F (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), a Las Vegas AC works harder than most. Small problems tend to turn into big ones under that load. Here are the signs worth acting on, with a link to the guide for each.
1. Warm air from the vents
The system runs but the air isn't cool. Check the thermostat and filter first. More in AC blowing warm air and AC running but not cooling.
2. The outdoor unit hums but won't start
A hum with no fan, or a fan that needs a push, often points to a failed capacitor. See AC capacitor failure and AC outdoor unit not running.
3. Ice on the lines or indoor coil
Usually low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off at the thermostat to let it thaw and see frozen AC coil.
4. Water around the indoor unit
A clogged condensate drain is common. See AC leaking water.
5. The breaker keeps tripping
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and schedule a visit. See AC tripping breaker.
6. New or loud noises
Grinding, screeching or banging. See AC making loud noise.
7. Odd smells
Musty smells are often moisture in the system (AC smells musty). A hot plastic or electrical smell means turn the system off at the thermostat and schedule a visit.
8. It can't keep up on hot afternoons
Some temperature rise on a 110°F day is normal. A home that keeps getting warmer is not. See AC not keeping up.

FAQ
What are the most common signs my AC needs repair?
Warm air from the vents, an outdoor unit that hums but won't start, ice on the lines, water around the indoor unit, a breaker that keeps tripping, and new loud noises.
Is it safe to keep running an AC that's making a strange noise?
Turn it off at the thermostat if you hear grinding, screeching or banging, or smell something electrical. Running it can turn a small repair into a larger one.
Why do capacitors fail so often in Las Vegas?
Heat. Capacitors sit in the outdoor unit, and months of 100°F+ afternoons shorten their life.
How many times should I reset a tripped AC breaker?
Once. If it trips again, leave it off and schedule a visit.
What hours is Colton open?
Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.
