AC Capacitor Failure in Las Vegas: Why It Hums and Will Not Start

A run or start capacitor helps the outdoor fan motor and the compressor get moving. After a long Vegas summer in full sun, a weak capacitor is a common reason the outdoor unit hums, clicks, or sits still while the house heats up.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules these calls Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

What it often looks like

  • Outdoor unit hums, then nothing; indoor blower may still run
  • Fan blades do not spin (or only spin if you give them a careful nudge with a stick — still turn cooling off)
  • Compressor tries to start and trips the breaker
  • Cooling worked yesterday; today it will not start after a hot afternoon

Humming alone is not proof. Contactors, boards, motors, and low refrigerant can mimic capacitor failure — AC refrigerant leak, AC making a loud noise, AC running but not cooling.

Why Las Vegas kills capacitors

High outdoor temps, long runtimes, voltage swings, and age all wear the dielectric inside the can. A bulging or leaking top is a clue, but a capacitor can test bad with no visible bulge. Guessing from the driveway is not a diagnosis.

What not to do

  • Do not open the electrical panel or swap the part yourself. Capacitors can hold a charge after power is off.
  • Do not keep forcing starts if the fan is stuck or the breaker trips. That heats the compressor.
  • Do not treat a capacitor swap as the whole story when the motor is already failing — the new part may die again quickly.

What a proper call usually includes

CheckWhy
Confirm call for cooling and outdoor amps / start behaviorSeparates capacitor from board, contactor, and motor
Measure capacitance against the rating on the canVisual “looks fine” is not enough
Inspect contactor, wiring, and fan motorWeak motors and burned contacts ride along
Replace with the correct microfarad and voltage ratingWrong size shortens life

When to call

Call when the outdoor unit will not start, it hums without spinning, the breaker trips on start, or cooling fails after a stretch of 100°F+ days.

Have ready if you can: about how old the system is, whether the outdoor fan was spinning, and whether anyone already replaced a capacitor this season.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Can I replace an AC capacitor myself?

We do not recommend it. Residual charge and wrong ratings are common DIY hazards.

Is a humming outdoor unit always the capacitor?

No. Contactors, motors, and locked compressors hum too. Measurement decides it.

Will a new capacitor fix a dying fan motor?

Sometimes briefly. If the motor is already hard to start, expect a short life on the new capacitor.

What hours can I reach Colton?
