Short answer: The Lakes is the gated community built around Lake Sahara, between Sahara Avenue and Desert Inn Road on the west side of Las Vegas. It is not Lake Las Vegas, which is out east near Henderson. Most homes here went up between the mid-1980s and the mid-1990s, so many systems are on their second round of equipment.

Built around a man-made lake

Ground broke on The Lakes in November 1984, when Sahara Avenue had barely been paved that far west. Lake Sahara, about 30 acres, was finished in 1986. The plan originally called for two lakes, and only one was built. The community covers about two square miles, and building continued into the mid-1990s.

Housing here is mixed. Production homes sit on the east side of the lake, and townhomes and condominiums are on the south side. The Beach View and Coast Line sections on the west and northwest shores were laid out for custom homes on lots that run down to the water. Homes range from about 1,500 to 12,000 square feet.
