AC Refrigerant Leak in Las Vegas: Low Charge Is a Symptom

Refrigerant is not like gasoline. A sealed air conditioner should not need a seasonal “fill-up.” If the system is low, it is usually leaking. “Just add Freon” without finding the leak is a temporary cool-down that comes back as another no-cool call.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules these calls Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm. We do not publish bait per-pound prices on guides.

What low charge feels like

  • Air barely cooler than the room while the outdoor unit runs — AC running but not cooling
  • System iced up, then blows warm after a thaw — frozen AC coil
  • Longer runtimes and higher bills without a thermostat change
  • Hissing at a fitting (not always audible)

Warm air alone is not proof of a leak. Wrong mode, dirty coils, bad capacitors, and airflow problems mimic it — dirty AC coil, thermostat not working.

Why iced readings lie

If the indoor coil or suction line is iced, pressures and temperatures do not represent a normal running system. Thaw with cooling off first. Measure after. Adding refrigerant onto an iced coil is how a wrong charge gets worse.

Leak find, then charge

StepWhy
Confirm low charge with proper gauges / temps after a valid runSeparates leak from airflow and electrical
Find the leak (dye, electronic detector, bubbles, nitrogen where appropriate)Top-off without a find is a repeat call
Repair or replace the leaking part when practicalCoil leaks change repair-vs-replace math
Evacuate and charge to the correct method for that systemGuessing pounds from a driveway chart is not a procedure

On older refrigerants that are no longer practical to keep buying, a leaking system often pushes the conversation toward replacement — repair or replace. Age alone still does not decide it.

What not to do

  • Do not “top off every spring” as maintenance
  • Do not add refrigerant while the coil is frozen
  • Do not vent refrigerant to the air
  • Do not accept a compressor condemnation with no leak check and no measurements

When to call

Call when cooling is weak, you were told it is “low on Freon,” the system ices repeatedly, or a prior top-off lasted only days or weeks.

Have ready if you can: about how old the system is, whether anyone already added refrigerant, and whether you saw ice.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Does low refrigerant always mean a leak?

In a system that was commissioned correctly, yes in practice — something left the sealed system. Rare commissioning mistakes exist; they are still a measured diagnosis.

Can I use a DIY recharge kit?

We do not recommend it. Wrong refrigerant, wrong amount, and sealed-system damage are common outcomes.

Is a refrigerant leak the same as water under the air handler?

No. Water is usually condensate — AC leaking water.
