Frozen AC Coil in Las Vegas Heat
Ice on an air conditioner in July looks backwards. It is usually airflow or a low charge, and running it longer makes the block of ice bigger.
The suction line should be cold and sweaty, not a solid sleeve of ice back to the condenser. Ice means the indoor coil dropped below freezing. The two common reasons are not enough air across that coil, or not enough refrigerant in the system.
Airflow first: a packed filter, a collapsed return, a dirty evaporator, or a blower that is failing. Charge second: a leak. In this climate people want to “just add Freon.” If the coil is iced, the reading is a lie until it thaws. We thaw it, then we measure.
Inspirada and other newer Henderson houses freeze up when the filter rack was sloppy or the return is undersized for a two-story plan. Older Southern Highlands and Anthem systems freeze when the evaporator has never been cleaned or the charge has been slowly leaving for years.
Shut the cooling off and let it thaw. Put a towel down if the air handler is in a closet or attic over drywall. Turn the fan to on if you want to speed the thaw. Then call. Do not scrape the ice off the lines.
Can I pour hot water on the ice?
No. Let it thaw with the cooling off. Hot water on a coil and electrical compartment is how a frozen system becomes a damaged one.
