Ductwork Problems in Las Vegas: When the Air Never Reaches the Room

A strong outdoor unit cannot cool a room if the duct that feeds it is disconnected, crushed, or leaking into a 140°F attic. In the Las Vegas Valley a lot of supply and return runs live in that attic heat. Leaks there do not just waste energy — they dump cooled air into the attic and pull hot air toward the system.

This page is about duct and airflow path problems. If the system simply runs out of capacity on a 110° afternoon with open registers and a clean filter, also read why the AC cannot keep up.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules these calls Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

Signs the ducts are part of the problem

  • One room is always hot (or always cold in winter) while the hallway feels fine
  • Supply registers have weak airflow compared with other rooms
  • You hear whistling, roaring, or air noise at one grille
  • The filter gets filthy fast, or dust blows from supplies after a filter change
  • The system short-cycles or freezes while some rooms never get air — frozen AC coil
  • A second-story or room-over-garage never caught up, even when the equipment was newer

Closed bedroom doors on a house with no return in those rooms make upstairs comfort worse. That is a return-path problem, not a reason to drop the thermostat to 68.

Common Las Vegas duct issues

ProblemWhy it shows up hereWhat a tech looks for
Leaky or disconnected flex in the atticLong cooling season; attic heat punishes leaksVisual, feel for air, sometimes pressure testing
Crushed or kinked flexStorage, foot traffic, tight truss runsAirflow at the register vs design
Undersized or single hallway returnBuilder layouts; two-story plansStatic pressure, return sizing
Room over garage starvedNever fed well on day oneBranch layout, dampers
Mastic or tape failed at takeoffsAge and heat cyclesJoints at the plenum

A bigger condenser on the same weak duct often makes comfort worse — short cycles, noise, and a coil that cannot breathe. We measure temperature split and static pressure before anyone talks about more tons.

What you can check safely

  1. Filter — replace if gray or collapsed.
  2. Supply registers — open them. Do not close most of the house to “force” one room.
  3. Returns — keep furniture and boxes off return grilles.
  4. Thermostat — Cool mode, sensible setpoint — thermostat not working.
  5. Do not walk attic joists to “find the leak” unless you already know that attic and it is safe. Attic work in desert heat is a tech job.

When ducts are not the first suspect

Warm air with the outdoor unit struggling, a tripped breaker, or ice on the lines is equipment-side until proven otherwise. Fix those patterns with the matching guides first. Ducts matter most when the equipment can cool at the coil but the rooms never see it.

When to call

Call when one or more rooms never get airflow, you suspect attic duct damage, static comfort problems remain after a clean filter and open registers, or another company already sold a bigger system without measuring airflow.

Have ready if you can: which rooms fail, one-story or two, air handler in garage/closet/attic if you know, and whether the problem started after a renovation or attic storage.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Will sealing ducts fix a hot upstairs by itself?

Sometimes. Sometimes the upstairs needs its own system, a better return, or equipment repair. Measurement first.

Can I tape ducts from the attic myself?

Only if you already work safely in that attic and can reach the joints. Heat, insulation, and hidden electrical make this a poor DIY for most homeowners.

Is a noisy register a duct problem?

It can be high static from restriction, a damper issue, or a branch that is too small. It can also be a blower problem.

What hours can I reach Colton?
