Why the AC Cannot Keep Up in Extreme Heat
A system that holds 74° at 10 a.m. and gives up at 4 p.m. is telling you about load, airflow, or a system that is tired — not that you need to drop the thermostat to 68.
Las Vegas design temperatures are brutal, and the second floor takes them first. West glass, a bonus room over a hot garage, and a return that is a single grille in the hallway are the usual reasons. The outdoor unit can be the right size and still lose if the duct cannot move the air.
In Southern Highlands the upstairs system is often the one that was marginal on day one and is now old. In Inspirada the equipment may be new and the room over the garage was never fed. In Anthem, high ceilings and a condenser boxed in by grown landscaping both show up on the same ticket.
Dropping the setpoint lower does not create capacity. It just runs the system with no off-cycle while the coil gets colder and, sometimes, freezes. Set it where you actually live, make sure the filter is clean, and keep supply registers open. Closed bedroom doors on a system with no return path make the upstairs worse.
We measure temperature split and static pressure before we talk about a larger condenser. Oversizing a system that cannot breathe shortens its life and leaves the house humid and uneven, even in the desert.
Will a bigger AC fix the hot upstairs?
Only if the current system is truly undersized and the ducts can carry more air. A lot of hot-upstairs calls are a return problem or a second system that has failed, not a need for more tons on the same duct.
