AC Running but Not Cooling in Las Vegas
The blower is moving air, the condenser is running, and the rooms are still climbing. That is a different call from a unit that will not start.
If the outdoor fan and compressor are both running and the supply air is barely cooler than the room, the system is moving heat poorly or not at all. On valley houses the common causes are a failed compressor that is still spinning the fan, a condenser coil packed solid with dust, a refrigerant leak, or an indoor coil that has frozen and then thawed into a warm blow.
A dirty filter is the one thing worth checking before you call. If the filter is collapsed or gray-black, replace it and leave the system off for an hour if the copper lines were iced. Do not keep running a frozen coil. If the filter is fine and the air is warm, turn the cooling off so you are not paying to heat the attic.
We see this on original equipment in Southern Highlands and Anthem, and on younger builder systems in Inspirada that have never had the outdoor coil washed. The age of the house does not diagnose it. Gauges, amp draw, and the temperature split do.
A company that quotes a full system from the driveway has not answered the question. The outdoor unit can be loud and still have a simple airflow problem, or it can be quiet and the compressor can be done. You want someone who opens it.
Should I leave the AC running if the air is warm?
If the lines are iced, no. If it is just warm and not frozen, turn it to off so it is not short-cycling while you wait. The fan can stay on if you want air moving.
Does warm air always mean the compressor is dead?
No. A matted coil, a low charge, a failed capacitor that lets the fan run but not the compressor, or a thermostat calling wrong can all feel the same from the hallway.
