AC Making a Loud Noise in Las Vegas: What the Sound Usually Means

An air conditioner should hum. It should not grind, scream, or bang. In the Las Vegas Valley the outdoor unit sits in full sun for months, so fan motors, capacitors, and contactors take a beating. Noise is a symptom. It is not a diagnosis by itself.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules these calls Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

Shut it off for these sounds

Turn cooling off at the thermostat (and the disconnect if you can do it safely) if you hear:

  • Grinding or metal-on-metal
  • A loud screech that started suddenly
  • Repeated hard banging from the outdoor cabinet
  • Anything that smells like burning plastic with the noise

Leave it off. Running a failing fan motor or a compressor with internal damage makes the repair worse.

A mild rattle from a loose panel or a debris-hit fan guard is different. You can shut cooling off while you look from outside — do not put hands near a spinning fan.

What different noises often mean

SoundCommon causesHomeowner limit
Rattle / buzz at the outdoor unitLoose panel, debris in the fan cage, failing fan motor mountVisual look only. Power off first if you open a panel
Squeal / screech on startFan motor bearings, belt where applicable, sometimes compressorShut off if it is loud or new
Hum then click, no coolCapacitor or contactor (often quiet failure, sometimes buzz)Not a DIY capacitor swap — they hold a charge
Loud bang on start or shutoffContactor, mounting, or compressor issueShut off if it repeats
Whoosh / air noise indoorsDuct, filter, or blower speedCheck filter once

A system can be loud and still have a simple airflow problem, or it can be quiet and the compressor can be done. Noise alone does not decide repair vs replace — see repair or replace an old AC.

Quick checks that are safe

  1. Confirm the thermostat is on Cool and actually calling.
  2. Pull the filter. A packed filter will not usually cause grinding outside, but it can make the indoor blower louder.
  3. Look at the outdoor unit from a distance. Leaves, palm debris, or a bent fan guard can slap the blade.
  4. If the breaker tripped with the noise, reset once. If it trips again, leave it off — AC tripping the breaker.

Do not open the electrical panel to “test” a capacitor. Do not stick anything into the fan while it can spin.

When to call

Call when the noise is grinding or screeching, it started suddenly with a loss of cooling, the breaker will not stay on, or you shut it off for a burn smell with the sound.

Have ready if you can: indoor or outdoor noise, when it happens (start, run, shutoff), and whether cooling still works.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm. If a bad noise starts outside those hours, shut cooling off and call when we are open.

FAQ

Is a loud outdoor unit always a bad compressor?

No. Fan motors, loose parts, and debris are common. A compressor problem is one possibility, confirmed with amp draw and gauges — not from the sidewalk.

Can I keep running it if it only rattles a little?

If cooling still works and the sound is a light rattle with no burn smell, you can note it and call during open hours. Grinding or screeching: off.

Does noise mean I need a new system?

Not by itself. Many noise calls are a motor, capacitor, contactor, or debris. Replacement is a repair-or-replace decision after diagnosis.
