Heat Pump vs Furnace in Las Vegas: Which Fits Your House
This question usually comes up when an old system is near the end, or when someone moves into a home with one type and wonders about the other. There is no single right answer for the whole valley. The choice depends on the house.
Colton Air Conditioning talks through these options Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.
The basic difference
- Gas furnace: burns natural gas to make heat. Cooling comes from a separate AC system, usually with its coil sitting on the furnace.
- Heat pump: one outdoor unit that cools in summer and runs in reverse to move heat indoors in winter. Most have electric backup heat for the coldest hours.
- Dual fuel: a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, so the system can switch between them.

What matters in Las Vegas
Mild winters, brutal summers
Las Vegas winters are mild compared to most of the country, and most heating hours are cool nights and mornings. A heat pump handles that kind of weather well. Summer is the harder job: whatever you install has to carry the cooling load first.
Do you have gas at the house?
If gas is already piped to the furnace location, keeping a furnace is simple. If the home is all-electric, a heat pump avoids adding gas service.
One outdoor unit doing two jobs
A heat pump runs in both summer and winter, so it works more months of the year than an AC alone. A furnace plus AC splits the work between two pieces of equipment.
Ducts and airflow
Either system depends on the ducts. A new heat pump or furnace on undersized or leaky ducts will still feel weak. See why an AC cannot keep up.
Setup matters as much as the choice
A heat pump needs a thermostat configured for a heat pump and a sensible setting for backup heat. Set up wrong, the backup heat can run more than it needs to.
Safety
A gas furnace burns fuel, so a working CO alarm and periodic service matter. A heat pump has no combustion. With any gas appliance: if you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 from outside.
Questions to ask before you decide
- How old is the AC? Replacing heating and cooling together often changes the math
- Is the furnace or heat pump failing, or is it a repairable part? See repair or replace
- Is gas available where the equipment sits?
- How do your electric and gas bills look across a year?
- Are rooms uneven now? That points to ducts, not the heat source
We do not invent efficiency savings or rebate amounts. Ask any contractor to explain the specific equipment they propose and why.
When to call
Call when you are replacing a system and want to compare both options for your house, or when your current heat pump or furnace needs a repair-or-replace decision.
Have ready if you can: the age of the indoor and outdoor units, whether there is gas at the furnace, and any rooms that are hard to heat or cool.
Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.
FAQ
Is a heat pump enough heat for Las Vegas?
For many homes, yes, because winters are mild. Backup heat covers the coldest hours. The house and ducts decide the rest.
Should I switch from a furnace to a heat pump?
Often it is worth discussing when the AC is also due for replacement. If the AC is young and the furnace just needs a repair, switching may not make sense.
What is dual fuel?
A heat pump with a gas furnace as the backup, so the system can use either heat source.
Why does my heat pump steam outside in winter?
That is usually a defrost cycle and is normal. See heat pump service if it stays iced.
