Furnace Limit Switch in Las Vegas: Why Heat Shuts Off Early

A high-limit switch is a safety. When the heat exchanger gets too hot, it opens the circuit and kills the burners. In Las Vegas homes the usual trigger is airflow — a packed filter, closed returns, dirty blower, or blocked supply registers — not a “bad switch” by itself.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules these calls Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

What it often looks like

  • Burners light, heat feels good briefly, then flame dies while the blower may keep running
  • Furnace short-cycles through several tries — furnace short cycling
  • Hot smell or cabinet hotter than usual (shut it off for a burning smell)
  • Filter gray or collapsed after a dusty summer before first heat — same story as heater not working

Flame that lights then dies in a few seconds can also be a flame sensor issue. Limit trips are more about overheating after a longer run.

Why the limit opens

CauseHomeowner clue
Dirty or wrong-size filterWeak airflow at vents
Closed or blocked returns / suppliesSome rooms dead, cabinet hot
Blower failing or wrong speedLittle air while burners ran
Duct restrictions[Ductwork problems](/guides/ac-not-keeping-up)
Failed limit (less common first guess)Trips after airflow is proven good

Jumping straight to a new switch without fixing airflow often means another trip the same week.

What not to do

  • Do not tape the limit closed or bypass it. That is a fire and heat-exchanger risk.
  • Do not keep forcing restarts with a clogged filter still in place.
  • Do not ignore a burning smell, smoke, or carbon monoxide alarm. Leave, call 911 from outside for CO or fire concern, and shut the furnace off when it is safe to do so.

Safe home checks

  1. Thermostat on Heat, a few degrees above the room.
  2. Pull the filter — replace if gray, wet, or collapsed. Arrow toward the furnace.
  3. Open supply registers and clear furniture from returns.
  4. Confirm the blower door is seated and the furnace switch is on.
  5. One breaker reset if the unit is dark — then stop if it trips again.

If heat still dies early after a clean filter and open airflow, leave it off and get it measured.

What a proper call usually includes

Temperature rise across the furnace, blower amps and static pressure clues, limit continuity when cool, and a look at the heat exchanger when overheating or smell is in play. Replacing the switch is last, not first, when airflow is the real fault.

When to call

Call when heat shuts off early after the filter change, the cabinet runs unusually hot, or the furnace locks out on limit codes.

Have ready if you can: filter size and how dirty it was, whether vents feel weak, and any flash code.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

FAQ

Is a tripped limit switch dangerous?

The trip is the safety working. Bypassing it is dangerous. Repeated trips mean the furnace is still overheating — find why.

Will a new filter fix it?

Often, if that was the restriction. If the blower or ducts are the problem, the filter alone will not hold.

Same as short cycling?

Limit trips are one cause of short cycling. Flame-sensor and ignition faults are others.
