Furnace Repair or Replace in Las Vegas: How to Decide

Short answer: Repair a furnace when the fault is a single part and the heat exchanger and venting check out. Consider replacement when there is a safety finding that cannot be fixed, repeat failures stack up, or the air conditioner is also near the end, because the two are often replaced together and a heat pump may fit better.

Colton Air Conditioning schedules furnace diagnosis Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.

Why Las Vegas furnaces are a different decision

Furnaces here run few hours a year compared with colder climates. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport put the January average low at 40.5°F and average high at 58.5°F (NOAA NCEI normals, USW00023169). A furnace can be old by the calendar and still mechanically sound, while the air conditioner beside it has worked far harder. That is why age alone is a poor reason to replace.

Repair vs replace checks

FindingUsually points toWhy
Failed ignitor, flame sensor, limit switch, or capacitorRepairSingle, common parts
Dirty filter or airflow causing limit tripsRepair and fix airflowReplacing the furnace would not fix the ducts or filter
Cracked heat exchanger confirmed by the technicianReplaceCombustion safety; not a patch job
Venting or combustion problems that cannot be correctedReplace or major workCarbon monoxide risk
Repeated failures across several visitsPrice bothRepairs may keep coming
AC also failing or near end of lifePrice both, compare a heat pumpOne install instead of two; see heat pump vs furnace

Ask to see the evidence for any "replace" recommendation. A good technician can show the part, the reading, or the photo.

Safety first

  • Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm: leave the house and call 911 from outside. Do not try to relight or restart the furnace.
  • Do not run a furnace that has been tagged unsafe.

What drives a replacement quote

No prices here — they depend on the house. The drivers are: gas furnace vs heat pump, whether the air conditioner or coil is replaced at the same time, equipment location (attic, garage, closet), venting changes, duct condition, and permits. More on cost drivers on the cooling side: AC replacement cost.

Before you decide

  1. Get a diagnosis, not just a quote.
  2. Ask what failed and whether it is a part or the furnace itself.
  3. Ask how old both the furnace and the AC are.
  4. If you are unsure, get a second opinion.

When to call

  • The furnace failed and you want to know if it is worth fixing
  • You were told the heat exchanger is cracked and want it confirmed
  • Repairs keep repeating each winter
  • The AC is also struggling and you want both priced together

FAQ

Should I replace my furnace just because of its age? Not by itself. In Las Vegas, furnaces see light use. Condition, safety findings, and repair history matter more.

Should I replace the furnace and AC at the same time? Often it makes sense when both are near the end, and it is the moment to compare a heat pump. If one is healthy, it can stay.

Can a cracked heat exchanger be repaired? Treat it as a replacement finding. Ask to see the evidence.

Do you install furnaces and heat pumps? Yes — see furnace and heat pump replacement.
