Evaporative Cooler vs AC in Las Vegas: What Each One Actually Does
Las Vegas sells both “swamp coolers” (evaporative coolers) and refrigerated air conditioners. They are not the same machine. One cools by evaporating water into dry air. The other moves heat with a refrigerant circuit and can also drop indoor humidity.
If you are choosing, repairing, or replacing, start with how each one fails in this climate — not with a national slogan.
Colton Air Conditioning works on refrigerated AC and heat systems Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm. This page explains the difference; it is not a price list.
Side-by-side
| Evaporative cooler | Refrigerated AC | |
|---|---|---|
| How it cools | Water evaporates into dry air; moist cool air is blown in | Refrigerant circuit moves heat outdoors |
| Best weather | Hot and dry | Hot, dry, or humid |
| Windows | Usually needs a window or vent cracked for air to leave | House stays closed |
| Humidity | Adds moisture indoors | Removes moisture while cooling |
| Monsoon / humid spells | Comfort drops when outdoor air is already moist | Still cools; coil and drain handle condensate |
| Extreme heat | Can fall behind when wet-bulb conditions are tough | Sized for design load; can still struggle if ducts or equipment are weak |
Why the desert confuses the decision
People remember that evaporative coolers “work in the desert.” That is partly true on dry June days. It is less true when:
- Monsoon moisture rises and the cooler cannot evaporate enough
- Outdoor temperatures push past what the pads and airflow can deliver
- The house is sealed tight with nowhere for moist air to exit
- Someone expects refrigerator-dry air from a machine that adds humidity
Refrigerated AC is what most valley homes use as primary cooling today. Evaporative coolers still show up on older properties, workshops, and as a second zone. Neither sentence is a sales pitch — it is what the equipment does.
Comfort and moisture
If the house feels clammy with a swamp cooler running, that can be normal physics on a humid day, not a “broken pad” by itself. If a refrigerated AC feels clammy, that is a different problem: short cycling, oversized equipment, poor airflow, or a drain/coil issue — see AC running but not cooling and AC leaking water.
Repair vs replace (without bait prices)
For refrigerated AC: diagnosis first, then repair or replace — repair or replace an old AC. We do not publish starter equipment prices on guides.
For evaporative coolers: pads, pumps, and float valves are common service items on those systems. Colton’s day-to-day residential focus is refrigerated AC and heating. If you call about a swamp cooler, we will tell you honestly whether it is in scope or whether you need a cooler specialist.

When to call Colton
Call when your refrigerated AC cannot keep up, blows warm air, ices, leaks, or trips breakers — or when you want a straight diagnosis before replacing refrigerated equipment.
Have ready if you can: evaporative cooler, refrigerated AC, or both; one-story or two; and the symptom in plain words.
Hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm.
FAQ
Is a swamp cooler cheaper to run than AC?
Often on dry days, because it is mostly a blower and a pump. Total comfort cost depends on whether it actually keeps the house livable in monsoon and peak heat.
Can I run both at once?
Some homes do in different zones. Mixing moist cooler air into a refrigerated system’s return is usually a bad idea. Ask before you jury-rig it.
Will a bigger swamp cooler replace AC in Las Vegas?
For many sealed, modern homes, no — humidity and peak load still win. For some dry workshops and open older homes, evaporative cooling can still be the right tool.
