Is My Henderson AC Still Under Warranty? What to Check Before You Pay for a Repair

Short answer: Maybe. It depends on your equipment's manufacturer, whether the unit was registered, who installed it, and whether you can show it was maintained. Every manufacturer writes its own terms, so this guide can't tell you what your warranty covers. It can show you what to look for in your paperwork and which common problems tend to put coverage at risk. If you live in a newer Henderson home, check before you pay out of pocket for a repair.

Why this matters in Henderson

Many Henderson neighborhoods are fairly new, so many homes still have their original or recently replaced systems. Those are the systems most likely to still have some warranty coverage. They also work hard here. Long, hot summers keep compressors and fan motors running for months, and desert dust loads up filters and outdoor coils. Heavy use doesn't void a warranty. But when something breaks, a warranty company may ask whether the system was cared for, and that's when records matter.

Three kinds of "warranty" people mix up

TypeWho backs itWhat it usually involves
Manufacturer warrantyThe equipment brandCovers defective parts for a set period. Terms vary by brand, model, and whether the unit was registered.
Installer or labor warrantyThe company that installed the systemCovers that company's workmanship or labor, if they offered one. Terms vary by company.
Home warrantyA separate home-warranty company, often bought at closingA service contract with its own rules, service fees, coverage limits, and approved contractors.

These are separate agreements. A home warranty doesn't replace the manufacturer warranty. A manufacturer parts warranty also doesn't automatically pay for the technician's time to diagnose and install the part.

Parts vs labor: the most common surprise

Many manufacturer warranties cover parts only. If a covered part fails, the brand may supply the replacement, but the labor to diagnose the problem, remove the old part, install the new one, and in some cases handle refrigerant may not be included. Some installers or extended plans add labor coverage, and some don't. Read your paperwork for the words "parts," "labor," and "limited." Don't assume you have more coverage than it says.

What typically puts a warranty at risk

Terms differ, so treat this as a list of things to check, not a list of rules that apply to every warranty:

  • The unit was never registered. Some manufacturers offer longer coverage only if the equipment was registered within a set time after installation. Others don't require registration. Registration windows vary by manufacturer, so check your paperwork or the brand's website.
  • No proof of maintenance. Some warranties expect regular professional maintenance and may ask for records when you file a claim.
  • An unlicensed installer did the work. Some warranties require installation by a licensed contractor. In Nevada, you can check a contractor's license with the Nevada State Contractors Board.
  • Wrong parts or wrong refrigerant. Non-approved parts, or the wrong refrigerant for the system, can cause problems with a claim, as well as with the equipment itself.
  • Damage that isn't a defect. Warranties usually cover manufacturing defects, not damage from things like physical impact, flooding, or neglect.
  • Ownership changed. Some coverage is limited to the original owner, and some can be transferred. If you bought a newer Henderson home, find out whether a transfer step was required.

How to find out what you have

  1. Find the data plate. The outdoor unit and the indoor furnace or air handler each have a label with the brand, model, and serial number. Take a photo of both.
  2. Look up the registration. Many brands let you check warranty status online by serial number. You can also call the brand.
  3. Find the install paperwork. This includes the invoice, permit, or builder documents from closing. Newer-home buyers in Anthem or Inspirada may have it in their closing packet.
  4. Check for a home warranty. If you bought one, read its HVAC section, the service fee, and how you're required to request service.
  5. Ask before you approve work. If you think the system might be covered, say so up front. That way the technician can note model and serial numbers and document what failed.

Keeping maintenance records

A short paper trail can make a claim much easier:

  • Keep every maintenance and repair invoice, with the date, the company, its license number, and the work done.
  • Write down filter changes. Here, with the dust, that often means more often than the package says. See air filter size for help getting the right filter.
  • Save photos of the data plates and any registration confirmation.
  • Keep everything in one folder or email label so you can find it fast when the AC quits in July.

Repair, replace, or file a claim?

A warranty can change the math on an older system. A part being covered doesn't always make a repair the best choice if the system is near the end of its life. See repair or replace an old AC and AC replacement cost for how to think it through.

FAQ

How do I know if my AC is still under warranty? Find the model and serial number on the outdoor unit's data plate, then check with the manufacturer, online or by phone. Also check your install paperwork and any home warranty you bought.

Do I have to register my AC for the warranty? It depends on the manufacturer. Some require registration within a set time to get their full coverage, and some don't. Check your paperwork or the brand's website.

Does the warranty pay for labor? Often not. Many manufacturer warranties cover parts only. Labor coverage, if you have it, usually comes from the installer or a separate plan.

Is a home warranty the same as a manufacturer warranty? No. A home warranty is a separate service contract with its own fees, limits, and contractor rules. Your manufacturer warranty may still apply alongside it.

Will skipping maintenance void my warranty? It can for some warranties, especially if a claim involves a failure tied to neglect. Keeping dated maintenance records is the simplest protection.

I bought a newer home in Inspirada or Anthem. Does the warranty transfer to me? Some warranties transfer and some are limited to the original owner, and some need a transfer step. Check with the manufacturer using the serial number.
