Reviewed by Colton Air Conditioning, NV license 0092120 Maintenance plans can be useful, and they can also be a source of frustration when the term, renewal or cancellation rules were never explained. Colton's owner answers questions here about what a homeowner should understand before joining any plan, including Colton's Comfort Club. We wrote this with Inspirada homeowners in mind. The interview

Q1. What happens at each plan visit, step by step?

I believe preventive maintenance should focus on keeping equipment operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. That means inspecting components, evaluating performance, identifying developing problems, and addressing legitimate maintenance needs.

Q2. How do you make sure a plan visit is more than a sticker on the unit?

Not all HVAC maintenance plans are created equally. Some provide genuine value through regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and service benefits. Others are little more than recurring payments attached to discounts and sales appointments. A maintenance plan should help protect your investment, not create an obligation to buy more services.

Q3. For a newer Inspirada home, is a plan worth it? Why or why not?

Here in Inspirada, where air conditioning systems work through months of extreme heat and dusty conditions, proper maintenance can be especially valuable.

Q4. What should someone ask about any maintenance plan before signing?

Before signing up for any maintenance agreement, I recommend understanding exactly what you're paying for. How many maintenance visits are included annually? What work is actually performed during those visits? Are there additional charges for cleaning coils or completing recommended maintenance? Are repair discounts included? Is there a cancellation policy? And perhaps most importantly, are you paying for actual maintenance or simply a technician to come out and recommend additional services? At Colton Air Conditioning, I want customers to understand exactly what their membership includes and why it's beneficial.

Local context

Twice-a-year timing

ENERGY STAR recommends annual pre-season check-ups, with the cooling system in spring and the heating system in fall, and suggests tying them to the time changes.

What a check-up covers

ENERGY STAR's checklist includes inspecting the condensate drain, because a plugged drain can cause water damage and affect indoor humidity, plus checking gas connections, burner combustion and the heat exchanger on gas heat. More for nearby homeowners: Inspirada and checking your AC after summer.
