Financing a New AC: Questions Our Owner Says to Ask About Credit Checks and Terms

Reviewed by Colton Air Conditioning, NV license 0092120 When a system fails in July, financing often gets decided fast, and that is when misunderstandings about credit checks and terms happen. This interview asks Colton's owner what homeowners should know before applying for HVAC financing, and how Colton explains its own options. No rates or terms are quoted here; ask for the current terms in writing from the lender. Related reading: Colton financing.

The interview

Q1. What financing does Colton offer, and who is the lender?

Financing can make replacing an air conditioning system much more manageable, especially when a major failure happens unexpectedly. At Colton Air Conditioning, we offer financing through Synchrony, subject to credit approval and the terms of the specific financing offer.

Q2. What should someone read in the terms before signing?

But homeowners should understand exactly what they're agreeing to before signing anything. The first thing I'd ask is the total financed amount. Next, what's the interest rate? Is it a promotional rate or a standard fixed rate? Are there any deferred-interest provisions? What's the repayment term? What's the total amount you'll pay if you make every scheduled payment? And are there any differences between the cash price and the financed price? That last question is particularly important. Some financing programs charge contractors substantial fees, which can affect how equipment is priced. I believe customers deserve transparency about their financing options and the total cost of their purchase.

Q3. How do you keep financing from turning into pressure to buy more equipment?

But I never want someone choosing an air conditioning system based solely on the monthly payment. A low monthly payment doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the best financial deal. You should also evaluate the equipment being installed, installation quality, warranty coverage, and long-term operating costs. My philosophy is that financing should make a good investment more accessible, not disguise the true cost of that investment. Whether you're paying cash or financing, you deserve the same quality installation and straightforward advice.

Hard and soft inquiries

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that hard inquiries usually happen after you apply for credit and can affect your score, while soft inquiries, such as prescreening, are reviews that do not. More for nearby homeowners: AC replacement cost guide and AC replacement service.
