AC Short Cycling: What Counts and Why It Matters

Reviewed by Colton Air Conditioning, NV license 0092120 Short cycling means the air conditioner's compressor starts, runs briefly and shuts off, again and again, without finishing a normal cooling cycle.
What counts as short (per Lennox)
Lennox's communicating controls put a number on it. Alert 403, OD Compressor Short-Cycling, sets when the compressor ran for less than three minutes to satisfy a thermostat demand. It clears on its own after four normal compressor run cycles in a row. Lennox rates it Service Soon.
Codes that can show up alongside it
The same safeties that stop a compressor can make it cycle:
- Lennox 410 / 411: the low pressure switch opens and the system stops. After five opens in one demand, the outdoor unit locks out (411).
- Lennox 412 / 413: the high pressure switch opens. Lennox's checklist includes refrigerant charge, the condenser fan motor, the expansion valve, the indoor blower motor, and dirt or debris blocking airflow to the outdoor unit. After five opens in one cooling demand, the outdoor unit locks out (413).
- Lennox 400: the compressor's internal overload has tripped, so there is a cooling demand but the compressor is not running.
- Amana E15: frequent low pressure faults. Amana's causes include low charge or a leak, a line restriction, and a stop valve that isn't fully open.
What you can safely do
- Keep stored items and debris away from the outdoor unit; don't open panels or clean inside the unit. Lennox lists blocked airflow at the outdoor unit as a high-pressure check.
- Note any code on the thermostat or in the CoolCloud app.
- Don't keep resetting a lockout. Repeated restarts are what the strike lockouts are built to stop.
